The end of last month OnePlus released the OxygenOS 9.5.11 firmware update for the OnePlus 7 Pro. This is still currently rolling out to both the European and Global variants so keep your eye on it. Anyone who roots their smartphone and wants to update, you can download the stock kernel boot image for right here.

As mentioned in the download post for the official update, there aren’t any widespread issues that you should be worried about (unlike before). Instead, the company has decided to use this month’s update to focus mainly on getting caught up with security patches. The OnePlus 7 series has been behind a full month since launch but that has changed now.

There are some other changes included in this update but most people are just happy to be up to date with security patches.

Along with the August 2019 Android security patches, this update to OxygenOS 9.5.11 for the OnePlus 7 Pro also adds in some tweaks to the Adaptive Brightness feature. There have been a number of complaints about it not learning based on viewing habits so, hopefully, that issue is fixed now. Mobile gamers may also notice some changes to touch-sensitive while in a gaming session.

So, if you are currently on OxygenOS 9.5.10 and are wanting to upgrade to the next version then you need to have an unmodified kernel file (aka the boot.img file). You can easily fix this by downloading the kernel for your version of Oxygen OS and then flashing it to the smartphone while it is in Fastboot Mode.

Once you have that downloaded, you’re going to want to rename it to something like “boot.img” (without quotation marks) for simplicity. From there, move or copy that file to the same folder as your ADB and Fastboot tools. Now you can boot the OnePlus 7 Pro into Fastboot Mode and open a Command Prompt, Windows PowerShell, or a Terminal in that same folder.

Connect the OnePlus 7 Pro to the PC and then execute the listed command above. That will overwrite your currently modified kernel (aka the boot image) and then replace it with the stock version. Now, presuming you haven’t made any other root modifications to the device, you can download that OTA update and install it.

If you have made other modifications (actual changes to the system, not apps that just need root access), then you’ll want to undo those changes before restoring the OxygenOS 9.5.10 kernel boot.img to the OnePlus 7 Pro.
